How long does unemployment take to get approved through Washington ESD?
Filed my UI claim with Washington ESD two weeks ago and haven't heard anything back yet. My claim status just shows 'under review' when I log into my account. I lost my job at a manufacturing plant and need to know what's normal for approval times. Should I be worried that it's taking this long? I've been checking my account daily but no updates.

The typical processing time for Washington ESD claims is 2-4 weeks, but it really depends on whether your claim needs adjudication. If there are any questions about your separation from work or eligibility, it can take longer.

•What kind of things trigger adjudication? I was laid off due to downsizing, so I thought it would be straightforward.

•Layoffs are usually straightforward, but sometimes they need to verify details with your former employer. Did you receive any severance pay or have any overlapping employment dates?

From what I've seen recently, if there are no complications with your claim, Washington ESD typically takes 2-3 weeks for initial approval. However, if they need to verify employment details or investigate any potential issues, it can stretch to 4-6 weeks or even longer.

•That's helpful, thank you. Do you know what kinds of things might cause delays in the verification process?
0 coins
Sean Kelly
•Common delays include employers not responding to Washington ESD's requests for information, discrepancies in your work history, or if you quit your job rather than being laid off. Since you mentioned downsizing, that should be straightforward.

The timeline varies a lot depending on your situation. If your claim is straightforward with no issues, Washington ESD typically processes it within 2-3 weeks. However, if there are any complications like job separation issues or missing documentation, it can take 4-6 weeks or longer.

•Thanks for the info. I was laid off due to company restructuring so hopefully that's straightforward enough. Did you have to do anything while waiting or just sit tight?

•Just keep filing your weekly claims even while waiting for approval. That way you won't miss any potential benefit weeks.

mine took forever!! like 5 weeks and i had to keep calling to check on it. the waiting is the worst part honestly

Mine took exactly 3 weeks back in October. Filed on a Tuesday, got approved on a Wednesday three weeks later. No issues though - straightforward layoff situation.

•That gives me hope! Did you receive any updates during those 3 weeks or did it just suddenly change to approved?

•Nothing for the first two weeks then I got a letter asking for additional documentation. Sent that in and was approved within a few days.

Mine took almost 6 weeks last year because they had to investigate something with my previous job. The waiting is the worst part, especially when you can't get through to anyone on the phone.

•Actually, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. It's way easier than trying to call yourself.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your claim status, I discovered this service called Claimyr that helps you actually reach a live agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

•Interesting, I hadn't heard of that before. Have you actually used it yourself?

•Yeah, used it twice when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Way easier than spending entire days trying to get through their phone system.

I had success using Claimyr to get through to Washington ESD when I needed to check on my claim status. It's a service that helps you get connected to an actual agent instead of dealing with the busy phone lines. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they even have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Made a huge difference when I was stuck waiting.

The approval time really depends on whether your claim goes into adjudication or not. Simple layoffs usually process faster, but if there's any question about your job separation, earnings, or eligibility, it gets sent to adjudication which adds several weeks to the process.
0 coins
Adrian Hughes
•How do you know if your claim is in adjudication? Is there a way to check that online?
0 coins
Lydia Bailey
•Yes, you can check your claim status in your Washington ESD account. If it shows 'adjudication in progress' that means they're reviewing something specific about your case.

TOOK FOREVER FOR ME!!! Filed in September and didn't get approved until November. Washington ESD said there was some issue with my employer not responding to their requests. So frustrating when you need the money.

The key thing is to make sure you file your weekly claims even while waiting for approval. A lot of people don't realize this and lose out on benefits for those weeks. Also keep detailed records of your job search activities from day one.
0 coins
StellarSurfer
•Good point about the weekly claims! I've been doing those. What exactly do they want to see for job search records?
0 coins
Aisha Hussain
•You need to log your job search activities on WorkSourceWA. Three job contacts per week minimum, and they can audit this so keep it accurate and detailed.
0 coins
GalacticGladiator
•Wait, I thought it was two job contacts per week? Or did they change it recently?

Two weeks is still within the normal range. Washington ESD has been pretty backed up lately. Make sure you're filing your weekly claims even while your initial claim is pending - that's important for getting retroactive payments once approved.

Oliver Becker

Mine was approved in exactly 10 business days. I think it depends on how complete your application was and whether there are any red flags.
0 coins
Oliver Becker
•What do you mean by red flags? I tried to fill everything out completely but maybe I missed something.
0 coins
StarSurfer
•Things like gaps in employment history, discrepancies in dates, or if you quit vs. were laid off. Sometimes even small inconsistencies can trigger a review.
0 coins

It's actually three job search activities per week for most claimants. This includes applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking events, or even informational interviews. All needs to be logged in WorkSourceWA.

I work in HR and deal with unemployment cases regularly. Washington ESD approval times have improved compared to 2020-2021, but they're still dealing with higher volume than pre-pandemic levels.

•What's the difference between regular processing and adjudication? I keep seeing that term but don't really understand it.
0 coins
Sean Kelly
Adjudication happens when Washington ESD needs to investigate whether you're eligible for benefits. Common reasons include quitting your job, being fired for misconduct, or if there are questions about your availability for work. It involves reviewing documents and sometimes phone interviews.
0 coins
Zoe Dimitriou
•That makes sense. So adjudication basically means they're not sure if you qualify and need to dig deeper?
0 coins
Sean Kelly
•Exactly. It's not necessarily bad news, just means they need more information before they can approve your claim.
