SSN application delay for military spouse - 5+ months wait, need urgent help!
Hey everyone, I'm in a tough spot and could use some advice. I applied for my social security number back in December because my spouse is joining the military. It's been months now and I still haven't received anything. I really need that SSN, especially with the deployment coming up. Has anyone else experienced such long delays? Any tips on how to speed up the process or at least get some information on the status of my application?

Ugh, I feel your pain! The wait times are ridiculous these days. Have you tried calling their customer service line? Sometimes you can get lucky and reach someone who can actually help.

I've tried calling multiple times, but either I can't get through or they don't say anything when they answer. It's so frustrating!

Pro tip: call right when they open. You might have a better chance of getting through to someone then.

Or try calling 30 minutes before they close. Sometimes that works too!

Have you considered reaching out to your local congressperson's office? They sometimes have liaisons who can help expedite these kinds of cases, especially for military families.

That's a great idea! I hadn't thought of that. I'll definitely look into it, thanks!

Can confirm this works. My brother was in a similar situation and our rep's office got things moving within a week.

Hey, I found a method to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/eSz742AOvHc

I know it sounds sketchy, but I swear it worked for me. Saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imho.

Can you give more details about how it works? Do they just keep calling until they get through?

Yeah, basically they have a system that navigates the phone tree and waits on hold. When a real person picks up, it calls your phone and connects you. Saves you from listening to that awful hold music for hours lol

Listen up, because I've been through this rodeo before. Here's what you need to do: ā¢ First, gather all your documents. Make sure you have your application confirmation, your spouse's military orders, and any other relevant paperwork. ā¢ Next, try to schedule an in-person appointment at your local Social Security office. Sometimes face-to-face interactions can speed things up. ā¢ If that doesn't work, follow the advice about contacting your congressperson. They can often work miracles. ā¢ Keep a detailed log of all your attempts to contact SSA. Dates, times, names of representatives you speak to. This can be helpful if you need to escalate your case. ā¢ Consider reaching out to military family support services. They might have resources or connections to help expedite the process. ā¢ As a last resort, you might want to file a formal complaint with the SSA. Sometimes this can bump your case up to a supervisor. Remember, persistence is key. Don't give up! The system is frustrating, but you'll get through this. Good luck!

OP, make sure you're checking your mail carefully. Sometimes their letters look like junk mail and it's easy to miss important info.

This is why we need to overhaul the entire system. It's ridiculous that in 2023 we're still dealing with these kinds of delays for essential documents.

Hey OP, just wondering - did you apply online or by mail? I've heard the online applications sometimes get processed faster.

I applied online, but it doesn't seem to have made much difference in my case unfortunately.
