TC 971 AC 052 on Transcript After Amended Return - Refund of $147 Issued but Additional Tax Assessed

I keep checking my transcript and saw this code TC 971 AC 052 pop up last week. Anyone know what this actually means? My return was accepted back in February but still nothing. Starting to get worried something is wrong. Here's what my transcript shows currently: ACCOUNT BALANCE: 0.00 ACCRUED INTEREST: 0.00 AS OF: Jul. 04, 2023 ACCRUED PENALTY: 0.00 AS OF: Jul. 04, 2023 ACCOUNT BALANCE PLUS ACCRUALS (this is not a payoff amount): 0.00 ** INFORMATION FROM THE RETURN OR AS ADJUSTED ** EXEMPTIONS: 01 FILING STATUS: Single ADJUSTED GROSS INCOME: 137,473.00 TAXABLE INCOME: 101,418.00 TAX PER RETURN: 0.00 SE TAXABLE INCOME TAXPAYER: 0.00 SE TAXABLE INCOME SPOUSE: 0.00 TOTAL SELF EMPLOYMENT TAX: 0.00 RETURN DUE DATE OR RETURN RECEIVED DATE (WHICHEVER IS LATER) Apr. 15 PROCESSING DATE May 22 TRANSACTIONS CODE EXPLANATION OF TRANSACTION | CYCLE | DATE | AMOUNT 150 Tax return filed | 20231805 | 05-22-2023 76221-423-54276-3 806 W-2 or 1099 withholding | | 04-15-2023 | -$164 971 Amended tax return or claim forwarded for processing | | 02-18-2023 977 Amended return filed | | 02-18-2023 33277-454-59287-3 768 Earned income credit | | 04-15-2023 806 W-2 or 1099 withholding | | 04-15-2023 | -$164 290 Additional tax assessed | 20232405 | 07-03-2023 | $117 09254-565-06581-3 971 Notice issued | | 07-03-2023 846 Refund issued | | 06-26-2023 | $147 776 Interest credited to your account | | 07-03-2023 I'm really concerned about that "971 Notice issued" from July 3rd. That's the TC 971 AC 052 I mentioned. My return was originally accepted back in February (you can see I filed an amended return on 02-18-2023), but now I'm seeing this notice code and don't know what it means. I did get a small refund of $147 on June 26, but I'm not sure if that's related to my original return or the amendment. Anyone know what TC 971 AC 052 means and if I should be worried? The "Additional tax assessed" line also has me concerned. Did they find something wrong with my return?

Tax professional here - TC 971 AC 052 typically means the IRS needs to verify some information on your return. Could be identity verification or they need additional documentation. You should receive a letter in the mail explaining exactly what they need from you.

Haven't gotten any letters yet... should I call them or just wait?

Give it about 2 weeks for the letter to arrive. If you don't get anything by then, definitely call them.

Hey! I actually found this amazing tool called taxr.ai that explains all these codes instantly. It costs $4.99 but saved me hours of research. You just upload your transcript and it tells you exactly what's happening and what to do next. https://taxr.ai

100% works! It showed me I had an income verification issue and even told me which forms to submit. Got my refund 2 weeks after following its advice 💯

I had this last year! Don't panic - just means they're doing extra verification. Mine took about 6 weeks to resolve after I got the letter.
