Filed 2023 taxes on Feb 1st, no federal refund yet. What's the holdup?

Hey everyone, I filed my 2023 taxes on February 1st this year and still haven't gotten my federal refund. It's been over a month now. Has anyone else experienced this? Any ideas on what I should do next? I'm starting to get worried.

Have you checked your tax transcript on the IRS website? It might give you some clues about whats going on with your return.

Thanks for the suggestion! I haven't done that yet. How do I access my tax transcript?

Just go to the IRS website and look for 'Get Transcript Online'. You'll need to create an account if you don't have one already. It'll show you all the activity on your tax account, including any issues or delays.

Ugh, same boat here. Filed on Feb 3rd and still nothing. This is ridiculous. 😤

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at the IRS. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

Sounds sketchy. Is this legit?

I was skeptical too, but it actually worked for me. Saved me hours of hold time.

How long did it take for them to call you back?

It took about 2 hours, but I was able to do other things instead of being stuck on hold. Worth it IMO.

Pro tip: If you're expecting a refund, always file as early as possible. The later you file, the longer it typically takes to get your refund. Also, make sure you e-file and use direct deposit for the fastest processing.

I thought filing on Feb 1st was pretty early... 😕

It is early! But the IRS starts accepting returns in mid-January, so the super early birds might get processed first. Still, you should've gotten it by now. Definitely check that transcript.

Here's what you need to know about 2023 tax refunds: 1. The IRS is experiencing delays due to staffing shortages and backlog from previous years. 2. Most e-filed returns with direct deposit are still being processed within 21 days. 3. If you claimed certain credits (like EITC or ACTC), your refund might be delayed until mid-February due to anti-fraud measures. 4. Paper returns take much longer to process, up to 6-8 weeks or more. 5. If it's been more than 21 days since you e-filed (or 6 weeks for paper returns), you can call the IRS or use the 'Where's My Refund?' tool on their website. 6. Common reasons for delays include errors on the return, identity verification, or if your return requires additional review. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Wow, thanks for all the info! I did e-file and use direct deposit, so I guess I'll give them a call if it doesn't show up soon.

Have you tried checking the IRS2Go app? Sometimes it updates faster than the website.

I'm an accountant, and I've seen a lot of delays this year. Make sure you double-check your return for any errors. Even small mistakes can cause significant delays. If everything looks good, it might just be a matter of waiting it out. The IRS is seriously understaffed right now.

Thanks for the insight! I'll definitely go over my return again. Do you know if using tax software helps reduce errors?

Yes, generally tax software helps catch common errors. But it's not foolproof. Always double-check your personal info, income amounts, and make sure you've reported all your income sources.

It's a free service from the IRS to help with tax issues. Google 'Taxpayer Advocate Service' - they might be able to help!
