Can I cancel PFL and extend SDI after losing insurance? Need urgent advice!
Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle. I lost my insurance temporarily and couldn't see a doctor in time to extend my disability. Now I'm wondering if it's too late to cancel my Paid Family Leave (PFL) and have the doctor extend my disability instead. Has anyone been in a similar situation or know what I can do? Any advice would be really appreciated!

Ugh, that sucks! I've been there before. The system is so confusing and unforgiving. Have you tried calling the EDD directly? They might be able to help you sort this out.

Thanks for the suggestion! I've been trying to get through to them for days, but the lines are always busy. It's so frustrating 😫

Pro tip: call right when they open. Like, set an alarm and everything. Sometimes you can get through faster that way.

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM

Sounds too good to be true. Does it really work? $20 seems steep.

I was skeptical too, but I was desperate. It actually worked for me! Saved me hours of frustration.

Is it legit tho? Like, how do they even do that?

Yeah, it's legit. They use some kind of automated system to navigate the phone menus and wait on hold. When a real person picks up, it connects to your phone. Saved me a ton of time.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but cancelling PFL after it's started can be tricky. You might want to check the specific rules for your state. Some states have strict deadlines for changes.

Have you considered reaching out to your HR department? They might be able to help navigate this situation or provide some guidance on your options.

Okay, let me break this down for you based on my experience: 1. First, don't panic. There might still be options. 2. Contact EDD immediately. Explain your situation in detail. 3. Get a doctor's note ASAP, even if it's after the fact. Some doctors are understanding and might backdate. 4. Check if your employer offers any grace period for insurance lapses. 5. Look into appealing the decision if they initially deny your request. 6. Document EVERYTHING. Every call, every letter, every conversation. 7. Consider seeking help from a disability advocate or lawyer if things get complicated. Remember, the system is confusing by design. Don't give up! Keep pushing and advocating for yourself. Good luck!

Have you looked into retroactive disability coverage? Some states offer it under certain circumstances. Might be worth investigating.
